Harold and Raymond McPheron, two aging but self-reliant cattle ranchers, are haunted by their imaginings of what they may have missed in life by electing never to get married, never to strike out on their own. Victoria Roubideaux, a high-school senior, is thrown out of her house when her mother discovers she’s pregnant. Among the several damaged families in this beautifully cadenced and understated tale is that of Tom Guthrie, a high-school history teacher in small Holt, Colorado, who’s left to raise his two young sons, Ike and Bobby, alone when his troubled wife first withdraws from them and then, without explanation, abandons them altogether. A stirring meditation on the true nature and necessity of the family. ![]()

I knew someone who knew a person who was enslaved. These people knew individuals who had been in slavery, and I knew those people. But she was enslaved, and she grew up to marry a man after her-my great-grandmother's father died, married a man who was not freed until the end of the Civil War. (Photo by Tony Rinaldo) On June 2, the National Archives welcomed back Pulitzer Prizewinning historian and Texas. Annette Gordon-Reed discussed her new book, On Juneteenth, at the National Archives on June 2, 2021. It is also called Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. And she was freed as a girl by her father, the person who owned her and along with her mother, so she didn't spend her entire life in slavery. This day has come to be known as Juneteenth, a combination of June and 19th. But it was a way to think about Black history really because you're thinking about slavery that immediately connects you to the past, and as you said, my great-grandmother, her mother was born enslaved. It first celebrated in 1980, and by then, news anchors and local news would have stories about Juneteenth, and I think it became more of an occasion for general celebration. It became a state holiday in 1980, officially. I'm not really sure if White Texans celebrated it when I was a kid. ![]() |
